美国共有3000多所大学，考生择校的余地自然很大。因此，在美国，没有百里挑一的大学。一所大学的录取率在50%以下，就算是招生很严格了。当然，录取率并不是衡量大学水准的惟一标准，其他还包括：学生在高中的成绩排名，平均分数和SAT成绩(类似于中国的高考成绩)等等。有些学校虽然录取率在50%以上，达到50-75%之间，但SAT的语言平均分数在500分以上，数学平均分数在600分以上，也是很难进入的大学了。另外，一些专业学院也许要的成绩不那么高，如军事、音乐、艺术等等，但是要求考生必须具备特殊的才能，也不是很容易考进的。
哈佛大学、普林斯顿大学、哥伦比亚大学、斯坦福大学、耶鲁大学、布朗大学、加州理工学院、MIT和达特茅斯学院，被认为是美国招生最严格的大学，也是最难考的。除此之外，当然也少不了约翰霍普金斯大学(录取率33%)、西北大学(32%)、莱斯大学(27%)等一流名校。
公立大学中以加州伯克利大学(27%)、弗吉尼亚大学(34%)等最难进;人文学院中以阿姆赫斯特学院(23%)、威廉姆斯学院(30%)、威斯理安大学(43%)为最;军事学院为美国海岸警卫学院(11%)、西点军校(12%)、美国空军学院(17%)等;音乐与艺术类学院是茱丽亚音乐学院(12%)、纽约室内设计学校(31%)和伊斯特曼音乐学院(35%)。
